History

Rebuilding Together began in Midland Texas in 1973 as “Christmas In April”, in the neighbors-helping–neighbors tradition of the old fashioned barn-raising. Today, it is the largest national volunteer organization dedicated to rehabilitating and preserving communities.

In partnership with the communities Rebuilding Together is committed to working with low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, physically challenged, or families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence.

With more than 200 affiliates nationwide, Rebuilding Together Volunteers rehabilitate and revitalize homes and non-profit facilities that serve the low-income population. On a traditional annual Rebuild Workday, (the last Saturday in April) there are approximately 250,000 volunteers working in 700 cities across the country.

With the support of local companies, Rebuilding Together Volunteers transform these homes in a single day resulting in a tremendous positive impact in our communities by:

  • Enabling elderly and physically challenged homeowners to remain in their homes with dignity in the comfort and independence of their own homes.
  • Creating safer homes by addressing safety issues. (Falls are the leading cause of injury, death among seniors.)
  • Improving neighborhood pride and discouraging neighborhood crime.
  • Creating a tremendous sense of “community” impacting everyone involved in the process.
  • Maintaining affordable housing.
  • Revitalizing neighborhoods and restoring increase in property values.
